We stayed in our motorhome in the car park, where parking is free, with the expectation that you’ll patronise the bar. That seems fair, and the least you can do. The staff were excellent, friendly, and very capable. I can’t praise the food enough. Honestly, it was probably the best pub meal I’ve ever had: generous homemade portions, cooked perfectly, and not expensive. The sausage, liver and onions were superb. Outstanding.

The staff were welcoming and friendly, and both breakfast and dinner were very good. We’ve now stayed at Ye Olde Red Lion twice and have been happy on both visits. Our room was basic but had what we needed, including tea and coffee, a large TV, a hairdryer, and bathroom toiletries. It’s a 25-minute drive to the park and ride for the bus to York. We’d happily return again.

We had dinner for four, and the Tuesday and Wednesday special offer is great value. The Thai Green Chicken Curry was really nice, with good flavours and a decent kick. Drinks were a bit pricey, though where aren’t they these days? We paid just over £80 for four mains, two desserts, and drinks. The food is always good here.

There’s a lovely, well-kept koi pond outside, and a seating area too. The place is quiet and pleasant, the staff were welcoming, and the locals were friendly and enjoyed a chat. Service was spot on: our full English arrived within 15 minutes of ordering. There’s a help-yourself station for coffee, tea, and cereal, and the prices are very reasonable. A fish and chips shop is right next door, and the shops for other things you might need are only a short walk away. It’s also a short drive from York, so we’d definitely return for another trip.

A fab stop on the way to the coast or for touring the Yorkshire Wolds. There’s a great walk to the old church, and local places to visit include a bakery, hairdresser, bowls, supermarket, and cafe. The accommodation, food, bar, and outdoor seating were all good, and the staff were friendly.
