Best Western Kilima Hotel

We left in the early hours and drove the hour and a half home after finding bed bugs in horrifying numbers. Some were tiny and still, while others were large enough to crawl across the beds. We were travelling with our infant son, and felt awful that he had been exposed for a couple of hours before we noticed. The journey home disrupted his deep sleep and caused him significant stress. The place needs fumigating. We felt disgusted. The desk staff member was welcoming and helpful, and made us feel at home. The rooms were dated, but that suited the hotel's decor and condition, and we don't mind old hotels with personality. The swimming pool was great. Still, we couldn't believe accommodation under a reputable name like "Best Western" could be so dirty.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and the Full English Breakfast was great. I've never had bacon quite like it, and it was cooked perfectly. When I stayed there over six years ago, though, the hotel already felt very dated. My single room was tiny and cluttered, and getting to the centre meant a bit of a walk.

I slept on top of the duvet and still got bitten. The bedding was unpleasant, the pillows were dirty, and the single room was badly furnished with old, tired furniture. Its shower head looked like it was from the 1980s. There were bare wires above an ancient trouser press with a 1992 sticker, the fan didn't work, and the iron only worked on maximum. What a disgrace. I showed everything to the manager, but got neither an apology nor a refund. I have photos to prove it all.

The heated pool and steam room were a nice bonus, and breakfast in the restaurant was excellent. The room was clean and comfortable, and the bar felt welcoming and cosy. Check-in was warm, friendly and efficient, and the staff were helpful throughout. A very well-appointed hotel at a reasonable price, a real gem.
