Holiday Inn Express & Suites Allen Park by IHG

The Hampton Inn in Allen Park, Michigan was one of the worst hotel stays I’ve had. There was no heat, and the room was miserable. Mold was visible in the showers, there was more mold under the mattresses, and the bathroom fan didn’t work. The pool was dirty and so poorly maintained that we didn’t feel safe using it. Hallway lights were out, and inside the room the headboards were dirty and the mini fridge was broken and filthy. These are management failures, not just housekeeping problems. The property clearly isn’t being properly inspected, maintained, or managed. A hotel under the Hampton/Hilton brand shouldn’t have filthy furniture, broken lights, mold, and no heat. The place is poorly run and completely unacceptable. I wouldn’t recommend staying until serious improvements are made. Save your money and go somewhere else.

We arrived around 11 p.m. during Christmas week, exhausted and upset after our Airbnb plans for three nights fell through. From the start to the end, everyone was cheerful and kind, and the rooms were very clean. The front desk staff were lovely, and Rosa the housekeeper was especially nice to me and my friends. We’d booked at very short notice, and the hotel had run out of rooms with wheelchair access. My friends and I asked the front desk if they had a shower chair. Less than an hour later, the front desk lady brought one up herself. Everyone treated us as people, not just a room number, and made us feel like family. It was a great experience. Thank you, and happy Christmas and New Year! I’d highly recommend the hotel and would come back if I’m in town again.

I was hired recently by Lincoln High School to speak at an anti-bullying school assembly, so I stayed near the school at Hampton Inn Allen Park. When I landed, I called to ask for a shuttle and they picked me up right away. The front desk was polite and checked me in quickly. They had coffee ready, and I enjoyed my stay. I was able to rest well and motivate the students the next morning.

Our room had a foul odor, and the toilet was broken. They offered to move us to a two-bed room that would have suited us better, but when we came back to switch, they said it would cost an extra $40 a night and put us in an even smaller room. The fitness center was a letdown too: both treadmills and the stationary bike were broken, and the TV didn’t work. We asked for a late checkout and explained what had happened, but got a firm no. Hampton Inn and Suites had an easy chance to turn things around and earn at least four stars, but the service felt like a one-star effort.
