Parkview Inn and Conference Center

This was one of the worst stays I've had. The pet fee was the first problem. I booked with the hotel and received an email confirming the room cost and a $15 pet fee. At check-in they wouldn't complete the process unless I paid $26.80. I showed them the confirmation from the hotel, but they claimed it must have come from a third-party booker and couldn't be honored. The person there the next morning said bookings made through the hotel are always sent through a third party, which undermined that explanation. In the first room, the lamp sparked and shorted out when my wife turned it on. The bathroom fan sounded like a malfunctioning jet engine about to fall from the ceiling. We tried calling the front desk, but the room phone was all static and didn't work, so I walked over and got moved. Neither room had a blanket or bedspread on the bed. The extra blanket on a metal shelf was thin, small, and nowhere near enough for two people. The bedsheet and a towel had black stuff on them, and a larger towel was torn and far too small to use as a bath towel. The room looked worn and shabby. The sink seemed dirty, but its surface had actually been scraped or worn away. I went back for replacement towels, a clean sheet to put on ourselves, and another blanket. My wife still chose to sleep under her coat because the blankets weren't enough. When I raised the fee issue at checkout, the desk staffer was even worse than the man the night before. He mocked me and called me a baby. What hotel employee does that? I'll dispute the extra charge with my credit card company and see if there's a corporate office to complain to, though I fear the hotel may be independent. I'll see what the card company can do.

It's an old hotel, but the room was modern, clean, quiet, and had high ceilings, Wi-Fi, cable, and a fridge. No freezer or microwave, and the doors have three locks. The Friday night staff were friendly, efficient, and helpful. The pet fee was a $27 surprise because it wasn't listed on their website. If that 45% surcharge hadn't been so deceptively left off, I'd have rated it 4.5 stars.

Check-in at the lobby went fine, but the room had brown stuff smeared on the bathroom door, and after I bleached the tub myself, none of the marks came off. Who wants to clean a hotel room? The shower ceiling also had black mold, and there was chipped paint around the room. They advertise ice machines, but there weren't any. The vending machines only took cash and wouldn't vend products they had in stock. My room's landline didn't work, there was no TV remote, and the TV had damage that made watching difficult, with rainbow lines. Breakfast was awful: flavorless muffins, an unclean waffle area, and a breakfast space laid out like a tiny coffee shop. I wouldn't recommend staying unless you're expecting below-par service.

It's nothing fancy, but it's good value and tied for the cheapest hotel within a 20-minute radius. I stayed a week total over the course of a month. Only one room smelled of cigarettes, and the front desk changed my room quickly. There was a little riffraff among the other guests.
