I’m disgusted by what we found during our four-night stay in the second-floor rental at 226 S. Fletcher, rented through Fernandina Realty. It’s a nicely renovated property overlooking the ocean, but we saw 28 adult cockroaches. They were in closets, kitchen cabinets and floor, the sink and its face, under appliances, on the mantle and windowsills, and in the bedroom. There was also cockroach feces under the sink and in a kitchen-floor corner, which suggests an infestation rather than one isolated bug. I contacted the Realty company Friday or Saturday after noticing them. We were told an exterminator had been called, but nobody came during our stay. The manager spoke with me Monday morning and offered 20% off the room rate, valued at $390. We paid $2,600 total, including taxes and fees, for four nights. I asked for 30% because of the infestation. The owner didn’t want to offer anything, saying the first and third floors had reported no problems. I understand it’s a beach property and that it had been raining regularly, but paying that much to stay in these conditions was absolutely unacceptable. When I spoke further with Fernandina Realty’s Director and asked what he would have done, he said he would have left, and that since I chose to stay, there could be no further refund. I was only able to speak with the manager one day before leaving, and got no information about how the finances would be handled until then. Why would I risk losing hundreds or thousands of dollars before knowing how I’d be compensated? To the owner, your lack of concern about the reported infestation is abhorrent. For anyone considering this property, I invite you to pay a few thousand dollars to stay here and have roaches crawling on the ceiling above your bed.
