Ashland Commons felt like a home away from home. The common room made it easy to meet travelers from around the world, and I made friends I expect to keep for life. Everyone was friendly and respectful, with a nice mix of social time and quiet. I met outdoor enthusiasts, festival-goers, backpackers, and adventurers. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the service was phenomenal. If you want a real hostel experience with a strong sense of community, this is the place.

The staff were great, and the front office went out of their way to help me settle in after I arrived late. I really appreciated it. The common areas are comfortable and well organized too.

I’ve stayed here twice now and still have no complaints. Communication is great, and I really appreciate having an all-female room option. There’s also a bathroom off the main lobby, which is handy when I arrive late, as I usually do. I can get ready for bed there without waking my roommates. I drive between Santa Cruz and Portland, and this place is a gem. Compared with the many hostels I’ve tried, it’s peaceful and well maintained.

The only issue is the “flexible pricing.” The first week cost $198.00, then the second week went up by $100 to $298.00. To me, that feels like a scam. There aren’t any more people staying here. I can’t verify how the other motels compare when booking, so it seems like a way to fleece the public however they can.

I like the hostel’s design and general energy, and it’s pretty good overall. The odd part is that there are bunks in the kitchen area. To reach a private room, you have to walk past people who are sleeping. Usually a private room has its own private access, so this setup feels awkward.
