TYLER S.
I expected to love this place, but the stay felt badly out of line with the price and the luxury boutique hotel image. At $400 a night, I expect comfort, cleanliness, hospitality, and authenticity. This felt like an overpriced themed B&B with luxury branding. The bathroom floor hadn't been cleaned when we arrived: there was hair, debris, and a dead bug. The private bathroom was across the hall, which felt awkward and wasn't what I expected at this price. There was no staff on site after 5 PM, just keypad and self-entry systems. The bed creaked constantly, the mattress was uncomfortable, and the sheets and bedding felt cheap and rough. Bathroom ventilation was poor. Breakfast was among the worst I've had at a property in this price range. I found the eggs and sausage nearly inedible, the crepes underwhelming, and the promised grab-and-go breakfast was missing. Parking was limited, and staff were using guest spaces. The whole operation felt heavily cost-optimized despite charging true boutique luxury prices. The property relies on elevated photos and luxury hotel branding, but the actual hospitality didn't come close. The look felt artificial too: many of the antiques and decorative choices seemed like imitations rather than authentic historic charm, making the place feel staged and tacky instead of elevated. I've stayed at legitimate boutique luxury properties many times, and the difference was obvious. To me, real boutique hospitality means attentive service, quality bedding, polished operations, thoughtful food service, and care for comfort and details. McCall felt like a lean-cost operation made to look luxurious in photos without delivering that level of experience. It may suit travelers who value quaint and cozy more than luxury-level hospitality. Most guests I saw seemed older, and I suspect some reviews reflect a different set of expectations from younger travelers used to more authentic design, better bedding and food, and stronger operations.

The staff were warm and helpful, and the food was delicious. Our beautifully decorated room had everything we could use, and the property seemed to have just about anything we'd have needed if we forgot something. The location was perfect, with nearly everything within walking distance. It's a beautiful place, and I'd gladly stay again when traveling that way.

The food was outstanding, and Sienna was a wonderful server who really helped make our afternoon tea such a good time. It was one of the best afternoon teas we've ever had.

We stayed in the Chaucer Room for our anniversary weekend, and it was so charming. The hotel has been beautifully restored and decorated, and breakfast was excellent. There are lots of great restaurants and parks within walking distance. We can't wait to return.

It was our first visit, and we'll be back. The room was fantastic, service was spot on, and breakfast was very tasty. The location is perfect if you're in town for a meal or the Shakespeare festival.
