Hotel Elliott

There’s a rustic, cozy feel throughout, and our room, the location, and the rooftop views were all great. Breakfast was included and good. Parking was simple enough, just find a spot on the street and read the signs carefully. Front desk service was minimal, which suited me fine. We’d stay again.

The breakfast was disappointing: there were very few choices, nearly everything was gone by 0830, and what we managed to get was cold. I also wondered about the food safety of what was left out. Service was missing throughout our stay, with no welcome or good morning at night or in the morning, and no thanks when we left. The room cleanliness was just as bad. Our first room hadn’t been cleaned or turned over, so we went back and got another. In that supposedly clean room, there was a dirty robe in the closet, hair in the tub and on the bathroom floor, a dirty mirror, hair in the bed, and what looked like an ink or pen stain on the linens. We told the front desk, and a housekeeper came for a “touchup.” The robe was gone and the mirror was clean when we returned, but the bathroom hair was still there. I don’t think they vacuum at all. The lack of hospitality was astounding, and I expected better from Hotel Elliot. I can’t recommend staying here.

Our room itself was beautiful, with a great view, a gorgeous bathroom, and a comfortable bed. I’ve read reviews about messy rooms, and given the hotel’s current issues, I believe them, but we had no problems with ours. The rest of the stay was a mess. We had three rooms booked together for two nights, but the person who made the reservation wasn’t arriving until 9:30 p.m. The rest of us got there around 6 p.m. and were told we couldn’t check in until the booker showed up with ID and the card used to pay. We offered to change the reservation to our names, but the desk said it wasn’t possible and against policy. They said we could cancel and rebook separately, but that meant a cancellation fee equal to the first night. It was an event weekend in astoria, options elsewhere were limited, and our 4 year old needed to get to bed, so we ended up doing that. The next morning, Landon at the front desk was incredibly kind. After I explained what happened, he said it was entirely avoidable and there was a way to handle the situation that we hadn’t been offered the night before. We were treated like we were trying to cheat the hotel out of a night. We tried many times to speak with a manager and were told they only communicate by email. I asked for a call in the morning to find out why Landon’s solution hadn’t been offered, but no one followed up. During the rebooking, I was told, “I'm doing you a favor by letting you stay tonight. I was given the authority to remove you from the hotel.” I wonder if that authority came by phone or email. The owners and managers should read the last six months or so of reviews. Similar problems, especially the difficulty reaching a manager, keep coming up. The policies staff are enforcing feel completely lacking in humanity, and guests are treated as unreasonable at best or criminals at worst. We cancelled the rest of our stay at Hotel Elliott and moved to the Bowline, where we had the kind of experience you’d expect from a hospitality driven organization. If you want a nice hotel in Astoria, book the Bowline.

My boyfriend and I moved here after a nightmare stay at a motel, and we’ve extended our stay twice. The first extra night was because we felt lazy, and the second was because we both had work meetings and couldn’t drive back to Portland while we both needed to be on Teams. Someone has to drive! The staff have been nothing but professional and gracious. The hotel is lovely, the location is perfect, and the service has been incredible. We love it and will recommend it to others.
