Howard Johnson Express Inn Beckley

The location is right off the interstate with plenty of restaurants nearby, but you get what you pay for. Next time I’ll spend the extra $10 for somewhere nicer. I won’t be back. I wondered if this was a party place because of all the signs: guests from two neighboring hotels weren’t allowed on the property, locals within 50 miles of Beckley couldn’t rent rooms, cooking in rooms wasn’t allowed, no loitering in the lobby after 10 PM, and security could evict someone after the first noise complaint. The room wasn’t filthy with hair or garbage, but it wasn’t clean either. There were stains on the walls and sheets, the textured bathtub was stained, and the shower curtain looked dirty and stained, like it hadn’t been changed or cleaned in months. A previous guest had left a razor in the tub. The sheets were very thin, the pillows terrible, and the bed’s softness was okay but nothing special.

The staff were very nice and knew the area well, and my room was clean with a really comfortable bed. I was satisfied with my stay and couldn’t have asked for a better place. Breakfast is included, though there wasn’t anything there for a diabetic.

My truck broke down, so I had to get it to Freightliner and rush to Johnson by Uber before they closed. At the hotel, the front desk man had an attitude and said I’d have to wait out in the freezing cold until my company sent the reservation. Then my reservation was canceled because they said I was loitering, even though I was only waiting in the lobby for approval and it didn’t take that long. The man at the desk and the female manager were heartless. I hope karma catches up with them.

They charged my card when I reserved the room. I called to cancel and was told to allow 7-10 business days for the refund. After ten days, we followed up and they claimed we’d never canceled, then kept more than $100. We never checked in or used the hotel. They lied a lot, and I absolutely don’t recommend this scam hotel. Choose somewhere loyal and honest instead.
