Motel 6 Benton Harbor

We arrived late on Labor Day weekend and had no other room available, so I felt stuck. I wish I’d stayed in my car. The room should be condemned. The floor was uneven and flooded, the walls were cracked, and the tiles were broken. The bathroom was filthy, with a rusty towel and shower bar, and I don’t think the shower had been cleaned in ten years. When I used it, water poured out into the room, flooding a good four feet and at least an inch deep, and setting off horrible mold. My husband had to pack our things while I left. I walked out with a horrible headache and felt sick for a couple of hours afterward. Unbelievably disgusting. Motel 6 should take its name off this location, and nobody should sleep in that room again.

We didn’t stay. I walked in and saw a dirty floor and bathroom, plus huge stains on the comforters, not just the sheets. I was too nervous to go farther into the room, and my fiancé looked around and told me to get our money back. The photos look nothing like the actual rooms. The area seemed fine until we got to this motel, where random people were hanging around outside doing who knows what. I worried about being mugged or murdered, and about bed bugs. I’d have taken a picture if I hadn’t been so scared. A friendly girl greeted me, but the room was another story. We drove down the road to Red Roof Inn and paid an extra twenty bucks. That was worth it to feel safe through the night. The employee there said she constantly gets customers coming in from Motel 6. One of the worst hotels I’ve been to. Pay the extra money from the start and DO NOT go here.

Our room smelled so strongly of cigarettes that I couldn’t stop sneezing, even though we’d asked for non-smoking. It was filthy, with a cigarette burn on the sheets, a dusty towel shelf that stained the towels, and a dirty, sticky floor. The toilet was clogged. We asked reception for something to clean it, but she said she was alone that day and couldn’t bring us anything, so we had to use the restroom at Home depot across the street. People living year round on the side overlooking Home Depot partied in the parking lot, smoked pot, made lots of noise, and fought at night. It became dangerous enough that we had to leave.

I paid $70, and it wasn’t worth it. The property is old, but I stay at plenty of Motel 6 locations and this one ranks near the bottom. I’d reserved a non-smoking room, yet all I could smell when I walked in was old smoke. My blanket had cigarette burns, and the floors, walls, doors, and bathroom were all dirty.
