I spent two nights here, booked through my company’s hotel service because the rate was reasonable and it was somewhat close to the airport. The historic building has been kept up beautifully and turned into a hotel that retains its old-fashioned sophistication while offering the comforts you’d expect. From outside, I thought my GPS had led me to the wrong place because it looked more like a boutique hotel than a Hampton Inn. My favorite parts of the king room were the bed and bathroom. It wasn’t the largest room, but the layout made good use of the space. The bathroom fits the building’s architecture, with historic-looking shower tile and modern fixtures that suit the style. On the first day, around 9 AM, the water never got truly hot, though it was hot on day two. The toilet tank also dripped and refilled loudly about every 30 minutes. I told the staff, but it was still leaking when I returned that evening. A small annoyance overall. Valet was excellent, but at $38/night it’s expensive.
We booked through Expedia and were told the hotel was close to 9 out of 10 stars. The building is very old, and we ran into several issues that staff didn’t seem concerned about. There’s no dedicated parking garage, and although valet is offered, I had no idea where they parked the car. We wound up paying another $21 to use an unsecured lot a block away. There were also homeless people hanging around in the park across the street. Some parts look nice during the remodel, and our room itself was clean. But after arriving in the dark, we found no room lights connected to the switch by the door, so we had to use our phones to find a lamp. None of the lamps worked from that switch either. The shower didn’t work, so we had to take a bath. Two of the three USB outlets were dead. The TV picture was amazing, but the sound was terrible. When we told the front desk, they only said they’d inform maintenance. They didn’t offer any compensation. This hotel has potential, but needs much better management.
Breakfast had a wide range of choices and worked for my dietary needs. The bathroom had all the toiletries I needed, the shower was a 10/10, and the oversized towels were a nice extra. At the Tutwiler, the water didn’t leave my skin feeling dry like hotel water often does. It was just an overnight business trip, but everything went smoothly. My upgraded room was modern, spacious, and clean, and I slept well in the quiet area. Valet was expensive, though the staff were friendly and helpful. I liked being able to request my car online, which made pickup quick and easy.
Our suite was lovely and very clean, and the location made it easy to walk downtown to everything we needed. Everyone on staff was kind and helpful. We had a wonderful stay and would absolutely recommend the hotel. Thanks, Tutwiler!
Everyone at the hotel was so friendly, and the spacious rooms look really nice after the renovations that are just wrapping up. We also loved finding out about the history of the hotel and the city. It’s a neat place in a great spot for getting to everything we wanted to visit.
