The Townsend Hotel

The chandeliers were still beautiful and clean, and I liked the quality Aromatherapy Associates products in the rooms. The Nespresso machine was a nice touch, as were the complimentary bedside waters. But The Townsend used to feel glamorous, and now it looks tired, with drab decor and cheap-looking holiday decorations. The gentleman at the front door kindly opened it for us. The front desk staff had no smiles. We were the only two in the lounge and had to get up to find the server, who did eventually wait on us. Staff didn't seem concerned about whether we needed anything and seemed more focused on chatting with each other. Hire a professional to handle the holiday decorations.

The Romance Package was well worth the price. We spent Valentine's Day evening at The Townsend Hotel, where it included a full bottle of Champagne, chocolate-covered strawberries, overnight parking, and a generous breakfast allowance. Before dinner at a nearby steakhouse, we walked around downtown Birmingham and stopped at a few bars. Everything was only a short walk away. The staff were courteous, knowledgeable, and prompt. In the morning, coffee arrived in our room very quickly, and then we eventually made ourselves go downstairs for breakfast. We both had a lovely meal, Eggs Benedict and Bacon/Eggs, and with the room coffee it came close to using the whole allowance. The food was reasonably priced. A memorable, enjoyable stay from check-in through checkout, and I'd do it again.

Check-in was quick and easy, and the front desk staff were polite and professional. The older, classic feel has its charm, and the location is great. The room decor was nice, but parts were clearly aging, with stains on some furniture and a lampshade. At about $300 for a king suite, I expected a fresher room and no extra charge. I didn't use the minibar, so the $22 amenities fee for coffee and other things I didn't use surprised me. It was a pleasant stay, but I'm not sure the value matched the price.

The area was lovely to wander around, with everything within walking distance. The staff and restaurant team were so kind and thoughtful, and they patiently answered all my questions as someone new to the area. The room was amazing, the service was great, and the whole place is beautiful. Can't wait to come back!
