Breakfast was nicely arranged and offered a good selection. The room was spacious and clean, and so was the hotel, including the outdoor area. Check-in on Friday night, 1/16, was quick for our one-night stay. My main complaint was one server. When we asked if there were more herbal tea sachets in the stock area, he muttered something we couldn't hear and was unapproachable and unhelpful. He may need some customer service retraining.

The hotel had plenty of empty rooms, according to an employee, so I don't understand why we were put in an adjoining room. The connecting door barely blocked the noise. The child next door fussed and had tantrums for at least two hours, then woke me at 5 a.m. Crying kids aren't my complaint. I just wanted a restful stay, and when I raised the room placement, all I got was an apology.

We stayed four nights before Christmas and never got room cleaning, even after asking reception several times, including on our second day. They said it would be done, but it wasn't. No one told us there was a staffing shortage or explained why the room couldn't be cleaned. We took the issue to the manager, but it still wasn't resolved. She offered $25 off each day, which I accepted, while also asking them to improve the service. Instead, she rejected our suggestions and asked me, “If you do the cleaning at your house?” I don't understand why she said that. It was completely unacceptable for a manager to speak to a customer that way. She then threatened to call the police if we didn't leave. I had my child with me and couldn't argue with her. I don't know what was going on with the manager, but this made for a very bad experience in the city. If you're hoping for a happy holiday, avoid this hotel.

The room was fine apart from the shower. The shower head needs replacing, and the hot water took an unusually long time to warm up, wasting a lot of water. We also had very little sleep because the person next door played the TV extremely loudly all night. At 2:30 a.m. I knocked on the connecting door and asked him to turn it down, but got no response. I decided to leave it there rather than involve hotel staff or the police. It was my first visit to this Holiday Inn Express. A trainee handled check-in and did a good job. The hotel is being renovated, but the workers kept the work discreet.

A comfortable, well-kept room and cordial, attentive staff made this one of the best Holiday Inn Expresses I've stayed at. The location works well for both Blowing Rock and downtown Boone. I'd definitely recommend it.
