Candlewood Suites Cape Girardeau by IHG

I’d stayed at many IHG properties over the years, but this was the worst experience by far. Several thousand dollars’ worth of my belongings were stolen during my stay. I filed a police report, though I felt the small-town ties between the police and hotel management meant the matter wasn’t being taken seriously. The lack of accountability was astonishing. Management offered no meaningful help when I reported the theft. They were dismissive and at times outright rude. I also contacted IHG, but was told this location is independently owned and operated, so they couldn’t step in. That left guests relying on a management team I found unpredictable, unprofessional, and seemingly unconcerned about safety or property security. The place felt lawless and management hostile. I’d strongly caution anyone thinking of staying here.

I needed a room from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. so I could sleep before my night shift as a nursing worker. I called reservations around 5:30 on a snow day and explained that I wouldn’t be staying overnight. They said I could make a reservation at 3 p.m. and would have to leave by 11 a.m., which didn’t work for me. The person on the phone was very rude and hung up before I could explain. They’re losing money by not letting people check in early in the morning. The hours need to change for people who work nights and need a place to sleep before their shift.

I’d give this place a 10 out of 10. The rooms are clean, and the friendly staff make it a great stay. There’s an indoor pool, a small store, and a workout room with an iron and ironing board available. The room has a full-size refrigerator and microwave, plus a stove, pots and pans, glasses, and silverware.

We paid $237.36 for one night, two queen beds, and one dog. That’s insane. Expedia showed a $25 pet deposit, and I assumed it would be returned if there was no damage. I even called and was told $25 that day. Instead, the charge was $75 and wasn’t refunded. The hotel website lists $75, though Expedia apparently hasn’t updated its pricing. The indoor pool was freezing, and most kids lasted less than ten minutes. There’s no free breakfast. The AC cooled the room, but it still felt damp.
