Breakwater Inn

Our vehicle broke down, so although we’d planned to stay one night, we had to ask if we could spend another half day in our room. They kindly let us stay without charge. I would have gladly paid to keep my kids warm. I can’t say enough good things about this hotel, and we’ll definitely stay again. Thank you for going above and beyond for my family.

We arrived after the office closed, but picking up the key was easy. The room was neat and clean, and I liked the small balcony overlooking the boats. We were there in the off-season, but with the little fridge and microwave, I can see how convenient it would be in warmer weather. There’s a restaurant on-site too.

Breakwater Inn has long been one of our favorite places on Hatteras Island, where my husband and I go two or three times a year to unplug and reset. After a tough month, we took a spontaneous weekend trip and drove eight hours, arriving around 4 a.m. to find our key missing from the after-hours lockbox. We were exhausted and frustrated. We called the emergency number and April, the owner, called us back around 5 a.m. She was on-site within five minutes. The hotel was full, but she quickly arranged a place for us to rest at another local hotel at no charge and said she’d take care of everything. She did. Later that day, we checked into Breakwater Inn. Our room was cool, clean, and welcoming. April covered both stays and comped dinner for us at the Breakwater Inn Restaurant, which we hadn’t tried before. The food and service were phenomenal, one of our best meals in the Outer Banks. We’ll make a point of eating there on every trip from now on. April’s quick response, professionalism, and care turned a potentially stressful night into a reminder of why we love Breakwater Inn. She saved our trip, and we’re grateful. April, thank you for putting things right and giving us another reason to return. You have our loyalty. Five stars, highly recommend to anyone visiting Hatteras Island!

The room was clean, and so was the bathroom. It had a microwave, fridge, sink with counter space, and a Keurig coffee maker. There’s a balcony overlooking the marina, plus a dock store with fishing gear, snacks, drinks, T-shirts, and more. We ate dinner at the restaurant twice and enjoyed both meals. The location worked well for us, with other restaurants and shops nearby. For groceries and really good premade sandwiches, try the Red & White.
