Westin Carlsbad Resort & Spa

The staff were professional and helpful throughout, and the shared spaces and facilities felt inviting and well designed. It’s a relaxing, well-kept resort with comfortable rooms, good amenities, and a high standard of cleanliness. The calm atmosphere makes it a nice place to unwind. My stay was very good, though a few details could be improved to meet expectations for a top-tier resort. Still, it’s a solid and enjoyable choice in the Carlsbad area.

We originally booked the Sheraton for our two-night family Legoland staycation, but at check-in we were told our reservation had been moved to the Westin because of construction. Our approved suite upgrade award hadn’t transferred automatically, which caused a small hiccup. The front desk sorted it out quickly and put us in an executive suite that worked just as well for us as the Ponto Suite at the Sheraton would have. The private back entrance to Legoland was a straight five to seven minute walk from the lobby, so it worked perfectly for our plans. Service was excellent the whole stay. Everyone from valet, the restaurant, housekeeping, and front desk was warm and welcoming. Special thanks to Taryn for going out of her way to make my boys feel special. We’ll plan to stay at the Westin next time.

I recently stayed at both The Westin Resort and Spa in Carlsbad and the Hyatt Seabird in Oceanside, California, and the difference between them surprised me. At the Westin, the staff were consistently friendly, attentive, and quick to help. That was the highlight. The room was spacious, the bed very comfortable, and the pillows great. I was even welcomed with champagne and a $75 credit for drinks or meals. The hotel was clean and perfectly adequate, though its appearance and design weren’t particularly impressive. The bath towels, however, were old and smelled unpleasant. The Hyatt Seabird looked much more impressive, with beautiful design and thoughtful, cozy room details. Its Oceanside location near the ocean is a clear plus, and the overall look fits a high-end destination. But service didn’t meet expectations for a hotel presenting itself as five-star. Even simple touches like proper bottled water were missing. Instead of premium still or sparkling water, they offered Costco-style flavored sparkling water, which didn’t fit the brand image. There were also maintenance and cleanliness problems at the Seabird: a strong paint smell in the hallways, a foul odor in the room, and a shower handle that literally came off. That would be funny if it weren’t supposed to be a five-star hotel. For service, comfort, and value, the Westin is the better choice. The Seabird wins on design and location, but if you prioritize those and can overlook the service issues, it has potential. It still has a long way to go to live up to its five-star claims.

We made a last-minute trip for one night. The room felt a bit worn, and neither the floor lamp nor the other bedside lamp worked. The toilet paper holder kept coming loose and dropping the roll on the floor. We didn’t get to use the pool, but it looked great and had a nice view. We used the private entrance to Legoland with the kids. The third-floor elevator took a while, so stairs would be quicker unless you need a stroller or wheelchair. Parking was tight, too. With so many large cars, people weren’t staying between the lines, and it was hard to find a spot. Service was great when we arrived. Later in the trip, though, we didn’t get the door and gate opening or greetings I expected from a Westin, especially while juggling a toddler and using my card to open things.
