The bed was comfortable, but the room needs a lot of upgrades. There was a soft spot in the upstairs floor, the bathroom was cramped and the tub dirty, and there was no smoke detector. The mini-fridge had no shelves. The TV worked, but its buttons and the remote were broken. The microwave was unplugged; once we plugged it in, it started up by itself but never heated our food. The rugs were filthy, so we kept our feet off the floor. We got only one towel for two people. Outside our room there was a horrible smell, and moving the chairs revealed a bag of dog poop underneath. The room next door had cigarette butts all under its chair.

After a night out, I came back to find cockroaches all around the refrigerator and microwave. The room smelled musty, and I should have checked out right then, but I gave it a chance. The woman was nice, though there was no after-hours number to call for something like this. I booked a hotel across the street instead and didn't stay the night. I'll try to get a refund.

You can reach Steamer's restaurant next door in under a minute, and the hotel is right in the middle of town, just steps from the waterfront. It's adequate, not a luxury resort, and matches the laid-back feel of the community. Come here for the slower pace, water, and fishing if that's your thing, rather than entertainment. Nature is all around you in Cedar Key State Park.

After our little 6 pound Yorkie started scratching once we were settled in for the night, I checked his back and found him completely covered in fleas. He'd never had fleas before and was clean as could be. My husband said we couldn't stay, even though we were tired, so we left. We got our money back, but the woman at the counter insisted we were lying. On the drive back to Indiana, it took two days, safe insecticides, and several baths to get hundreds and hundreds of fleas off our dog. It was a sad trip to Cedar Key. We're decent, very clean, understanding people, and I don't mind an older motel if it's clean and reasonably priced. We'd already spent the day looking around the island and had a bad meal at the Tipsy Cow, with rickety old wood, railings that didn't seem safe for little kids, and a couple of very rude waitresses. I usually love places in FL, but wasn't impressed here. Be careful, and definitely don't go to the Cedar Inn Motel.

The management let my girlfriend and me stay while we looked for a ride home after the insurance company left us stranded at the doctor's office with no way back. It's a quiet, clean, low-key place. Thank you again.
