Microtel Inn by Wyndham Champaign

You’ll need a car since it’s a bit out of the way from the rest of Champaign-Urbana. Our room was very clean, with no bad smell, bugs, or other problems, and the staff were nice and made good conversation when we checked in.

We’d been traveling all day with our pet and two children, so we were too exhausted to pack up the car and move after finding the room smelled strongly of fresh cigarette smoke. They’d put us beside an exterior door, which seemed convenient for taking the pet out, but you can only exit through the other exterior doors. To come back in, you have to use the lobby door. That security setup made me wonder if the area might be dangerous. I’d hoped a Wyndham location would be decent enough and hadn’t had time to read the reviews. After seeing the bed bug reviews, I kept feeling itchy. It could easily have been in my head, but thinking about it still gives me the heebie jeebies. There are plenty of other hotels around, so don’t waste your money here.

The hotel was clean and securely locked, with guests needing a key to enter through the front door. I didn’t see any bed bugs, and they may have resolved that issue. The night clerk tried to be kind, but wouldn’t budge on the charge for my certified service dog. That fee alone was enough to make sure I won’t give them my business again. The day clerk was curt and indifferent. I usually read reviews, but after long hours of driving I only checked the Wyndham rating. In my opinion, there are plenty of nice Wyndham hotels that appreciate their customers more.

I was fine paying the $50 deposit, but after I checked out the next day, the desk said the manager wouldn’t be in until 3 p.m. and would review the room before sending it back. Three weeks passed and nothing arrived. I couldn’t reach the manager, and when I called again, the front desk claimed we’d smoked in the room, which isn’t true. This feels like a scam. I wouldn’t recommend staying here.
