The Dewberry Charleston

The rooftop and bar area are really nice and a must even if you're not staying here. The location is very good too, with most places a 10-20 minute walk away. Service was very good, everyone attentive and professional, and the car service was excellent. I liked the architecture and decor, modern with mid-century classic touches. The rooms were good, though some things, like the hairdryer, need upgrading. The dining area could be improved as the low chairs and tables make eating difficult. Being able to have breakfast in the room helps make up for that.

We got a lot of use out of the complimentary driver when available, who could take guests to nearby places within about a five or 10 mile radius. It saved money on Ubers and parking. The bar had a fully stocked selection and some of the best hotel cocktails I've tasted, and the relaxing, immaculate cocktail bar above had beautiful views. The spa was also wonderful and felt very personalized. Our room was clean, cozy and spacious at the same time, exceeding expectations. The location was perfect, close to museums, attractions, restaurants, and all the action. But the best part was the customer service. Every person we encountered, from the front door host to housekeeping, bartenders, bell staff, and valet, was outstanding. They remembered our names during a two day stay. Every interaction was at the highest level. I can't imagine visiting Charleston without staying here. The Dewberry really shines as perhaps the best hotel in Charleston. The management replied in less than 24 hours. Thanks, Brian. We can't wait to come back! The room, bed, kind room service, and relaxing spa made this the stay my wife and I wanted for our first visit to Charleston. But I was upset that staff openly made negative remarks about a guest in front of other guests. That was extremely unprofessional in an otherwise perfect stay. Guests can be difficult, but staff should talk about it in the break room. This happened in the Citrus Club check in area near the elevators. I'm leaving this up so management can see it, and I'll change it to five stars once they reply.

The front desk, concierge, and valet staff were excellent, and the rooms have an elegant mid-century design. The hotel's location is great. But after two previous visits, I felt service had fallen significantly, especially food and beverage. The main restaurant is closed for renovation, and the formerly busy living room has gone from an end-of-night lounge feel to something more like a coffee shop. Thanksgiving dinner used to be special, with white tablecloth service. This time it was a mediocre buffet with little or no staff attending to diners. Food and beverage service was very poor.
