Chattanooga Choo Choo

We came in just to use the restroom and wound up exploring the whole station. It’s charming, with little coffee and cocktail shops, gift stores, and a spot to sit and enjoy the atmosphere. The women’s restroom was especially lovely and spotless. There’s also a hotel with a pool at the back. Such a nice surprise for a quick stop.

The old train cars and pond make this a cute downtown spot for a stroll and a drink. There wasn’t much else to do during the day. I bet it’s nicer in the evening, and events for kids would make it a lot more fun.

Elsie's Daughter is tucked into a cozy courtyard around some of the Pullman cars, with good food and indoor and outdoor tables. The courtyard has an elegant feel, and when I visited there was a DJ playing near the pool and fire pit. This district also has The Hotel Chalet, where you can stay in a fully refurbished Pullman car instead of a regular room. They’re luxurious, styled with modern amenities while keeping a nod to the past, sleep 2-4, and can host visiting guests. There are other places to eat and shop, too. It’s a historic area worth taking a stroll through.

There’s nothing left here that celebrates the old train history, and that’s sad. Most of the cars are gone, the fountains have disappeared, and sheetrock covers much of the historic architecture. Someone painted Darth Vader’s head on a wall, the sidewalks are nasty, and a big patch of green carpet sits where gardens and trains used to be. Good job Chattooga. At least I remember when the Choo Choo was an elegant place to visit.
