Best Western River Terrace

We’ve stayed here twice now, and it’s become our usual place in Cheboygan. Just keep in mind it’s a two-star hotel, though one of the better ones we’ve stayed at in that category. The staff are helpful, the rooms are roomy and kept very clean, and the river views are nice. The bathrooms are tiny, and we did run into a couple of irritating flying bugs, definitely not bed bugs or drain flies. It’s not close enough to walk downtown, but the location is still convenient.

It was late and we were exhausted, so we stayed in the room instead of asking to move. That turned out to be a mistake. The lobby looked clean, but our room was in awful shape and clearly needed a deep cleaning. There was dust and grime on the floor, especially by the nightstands and behind the bed, and the bathroom corners were just as dirty. The bed skirt had something dried on it that I couldn't identify. I always check the bed after a bad experience in Florida, and the zipped mattress cover had a horrible stain on the side. I couldn't tell whether it was body fluid or possibly blood from bugs, but it was nasty. My husband covered it with the sheets and bedspread on his side. At checkout, nobody was visible in the office, and there was just a clear key box on the counter, so I couldn't report it. The location is great, with a nice river view and close to what you need. I'd like to come back to the area, but we'd have a hard time staying here again unless the place gets cleaned up. This was room 114. I wish I'd taken pictures.

We had a three-night stay and would come back. The room was cleaned every day, and the air conditioning worked great. It was comfortable and functional, and the employees were all considerate, friendly, and ready to help. We also enjoyed breakfast. We didn't use the pool, but the pool and hot tub area looked inviting and was well kept. We needed somewhere clean that was pet-friendly and not too far from Mackinac Island, and this worked out exactly right for my wife and me.

The breakfast was a convenient quick stop before heading out, with coffee available from 6:30. The food was prepackaged and not very good quality, but it was fine for a bite, and the staff kept everything clean and well stocked. Our room was comfortable and clean, and the desk attendant was kind and helpful. It's right on the water and near lots of activities, even within walking distance. It felt expensive for what you get, but all in all we had a fine stay.
