The Grill was lively on Thanksgiving eve, and even though it was busy, we enjoyed the bar area. The Ocean Rissoto was tasty but a little salty, while the sautéed brussel sprouts were outstanding. We came back at 0630 for breakfast, when the restaurant was nearly empty, and the young chef got our orders just right. Good coffee too, though a pastry selection might help. Earlier, after checking in during the afternoon with my dog and a new friend, we drove out to Lake Oroville and the spillway, including the fish ladder. The lake and dam were impressive, though the lake could use a few big rainstorms. Back at the hotel, we walked around the neighborhood and looked at the old homes and commercial buildings. One strange moment came late that night when someone who seemed possibly inebriated drove around the parking garage like it was a racetrack. He was persistent and loud, and I’m pretty sure he got busted.

The hotel was beautiful, the staff kind, and breakfast delicious. But I couldn’t sleep in Room 214. Music from nearby was so bass-heavy it made the bed vibrate, and earplugs didn’t help. It went on until after 1:30 am, and I could still hear it all the way down the second-floor hallway when I stepped out. Staff thought it was coming from a nearby establishment. If you need a quiet night, I wouldn’t recommend the second floor or a weekend stay.

We went to The Grill for Sunday brunch to celebrate our 12th wedding anniversary. I don’t know what the rooms are like, but I’m sure they’re top notch. Brunch had just returned, and the service was friendly and personable from the moment we walked in. My wife and I each got a breakfast favorite at a reasonable price. There were $1 mimosas, though I had a beer, and the food was amazing. The 49ers game was on two of the three big screens, which was a bonus. I also like exploring old buildings, so I found the private board room in the basement. It’s quiet and would be perfect for a PowerPoint presentation, with catering on site. After looking at the dinner menu, we’ll definitely be back. If you want to make brunch feel like an occasion, check out The Grill at The Hotel Diamond in Chico! Sean

I spent a week here on business and would stay again without hesitation. The hotel is beautifully restored, with a great restaurant, in a lively part of town. The only thing that kept me from giving five stars across the board was the air conditioning going out twice. When I asked about it, staff immediately explained what was happening, what they were doing about it, and whether they could help me. I wish every business handled questions that well.

We were in town for a company Christmas party and had planned this as a Christmas family gathering. The service at Hotel Diamond felt rude, impatient, and unprofessional from the beginning. When I asked the waitress what cocktail she’d recommend since it was my first visit, she showed no patience while I tried to decide and made us feel like an inconvenience instead of paying customers. My brother-in-law was admittedly a bit loud, yelling “Merry Christmas” to everyone inside, and childish, pretending to walk down stairs in front of a window. Still, the staff handled it badly. They refused to serve him and kicked him out without a simple warning or calm conversation, and made no effort to de-escalate or communicate professionally. Hospitality should include respect and communication, and we didn’t get either. Between the service and the escalation, we won’t return and would strongly suggest people take their business elsewhere. I’d give the service zero stars if I could.
