The room was filthy-looking and run-down, and I ended up with bed bug bites. I’m worried I may have brought them home, and now have to figure out what to do for my family, including two kids under 5. I feel I should be refunded for the full stay and given a formal apology. Nobody should have to pay for bed bugs along with everything else that was wrong. DO NOT STAY HERE. There were dead flies on surfaces and I had to kill a few when I arrived. The trash was never taken out, I wasn’t given more coffee cups, the sink drained badly, and the A/C display showed only some numbers. There was obvious water damage on at least one wall. The door didn’t seal, things were broken around the room, and the laundry machines had apparently been out of service for a while without that being noted when booking. Even before the update, the room seemed neglected despite being clean. Wallpaper had water damage, some electrical outlets were broken, the toilet was stained, and you could see outside through the gap beneath the closed door. The walls were black, and the washer and dryer looked like they hadn’t worked for some time. I would have paid $20 more per night to feel comfortable. I won’t stay at the Birchwood Motel again when I return to Chincoteague, and I can’t recommend it.

The contact-free check-in and checkout setup didn’t feel very secure, and I would have preferred speaking with someone face to face instead of using calls or video chats. The room was okay for the price. The A/C worked, though it hadn’t been left running, so the room was warm when we arrived. The comforter was thin, towels were worn through in places, and while the floors were clean, nails stuck out of the transition strips. I don’t think we’d stay again.

We stayed one night with our two small kids and had no complaints. The room was clean, with no sign of mold or flies, and the beds and pillows were comfortable. I’d been unsure after reading the negative reviews, but our room, number 28, had no problems. We’d probably come back if we needed to.

The place has potential, but its upkeep ruined our weekend. The family room was extremely warm because the AC couldn’t cool it. We killed more than 30 flies, and a big gap in the door kept letting them inside. Walking barefoot for just five minutes left our feet black, which was especially awful with toddlers. The office doors had “open” signs but stayed locked, and nobody was there. We called the number on the door and left a voicemail the first evening, but never heard back all weekend, or since. I’d never stay here again or recommend it to friends or family. It definitely ruined our vacation.

For a one-night stop, the price was much lower than other nearby places, and the photos looked nice. We were in room 13. The town around it seemed quaint, and although people were sitting outside on the porches, it was quiet and the other guests were respectful. The woman who checked us in by phone was pleasant. The bathroom and outer sink were cleaned well. The flies were overwhelming. It seemed like one or two at first, then they swarmed out of a hole in the ceiling and flew around our faces while we were in bed. We had fly paper, but it didn’t solve it. There was a hair on the sheets, possibly from whoever put them on. The beds were very hard and the pillows didn’t support us much, though that wasn’t a huge deal for one night. The room smelled VERY musty, the carpet didn’t look clean, and we felt uneasy about the adjoining door because there didn’t seem to be a lock on our side. The main door had only a bolt, no extra lock. The A/C wasn’t great, but the room eventually cooled down. I might stay for a night again if the flies weren’t an issue, but I wouldn’t choose it for a week. Management, please deal with the fly problem. People would enjoy staying here a lot more if flies weren’t biting them all night.
