Maddox Inn

The Maddox was a peaceful place to land after the nor’easter the day before our October off-season getaway. The storm had flooded the streets and closed places, but the owner was helpful and everyone was friendly. Our dogs loved it too. It’s the only pet-friendly place here, and they take big dogs. An employee gave our pups treats, and being in an old-style motel meant no elevators, just easy walk-out access. It’s not fancy, and the inn has clearly seen better days, though the owner is renovating as he can. Our room was very clean, the heat and AC worked well, and the shower pressure was fantastic. I’m looking forward to seeing how the owner improves this piece of Chincoteague history.

The room really needs a deep clean. There was dirt, nail clippings, and a pill on the unvacuumed carpet, hair in the sink, mold on the bathroom ceiling, and black grime piled in the bathroom floor corners. The drains smelled bad, so I had to keep the bathroom door shut. The bedding looked stained or dirty, the furniture was dusty, and there was even salt on the bedside table. I used my own blanket and coat as a pillow. It could be a nice place. The exterior is well kept, the room smelled good, and there are cute glow-in-the-dark stars painted on the ceiling. Staff were friendly, the location is great and within walking distance of most things on the island, and you get a voucher for coffee and a pastry at the shop next door.

We celebrated our anniversary at Chincoteague again this past week, where we got married six years ago. We’ve stayed at the Maddox inn for the past several years and will be back next month. The room is always clean, and we like cooking dinner on the gas grills. Anything we needed for the room was taken care of quickly. The coffee and pastry included are wonderful! 😀👣🤙

We drove nearly five hours and found out we had no hotel, after booking several months earlier. The Maddox had cancelled our reservation around July 6 or 7, but gave us no notice at all. We had two separate confirmation emails over the months, and nobody contacted us. They tried to blame Expedia, saying Expedia had cancelled the trip, but the Maddox themselves also said they cancelled our reservation. Since it was the busiest day of the season, we had to pay an extra $250 to find another place. If they cancel your stay, you won’t be notified.
