Refuge Inn

We ended up adding an extra day because the weekend was so relaxing. I’d visited the island before, but this was my first time staying at a hotel there. Refuge Inn really goes above and beyond, with beautiful rooms, luxury amenities, and amazing staff. It’s family-friendly while still feeling tranquil. I can’t recommend it enough.

The library was a lovely surprise, a quiet place to relax and reflect. For a personal art retreat, I couldn’t have asked for a better mix of location, comfort, value, and calm. My room was spotless, with a beautiful view of the wooded area, especially at sunset, and the hot homemade breakfast each morning was a nice bonus. The staff were incredibly friendly, attentive, and helpful. I’m planning a group art retreat for the future, and this will absolutely be my first choice.

The ponies right in front of the property were a fun bonus. The first photo is one of them, and the other photos are from Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Refuge Inn is also conveniently close to the refuge, shops, and restaurants. Pony Tails Taffy had good apparel and taffies, Family Dollar had everyday items, Asian Express was convenient and tasty, and Captain Zack's Seafood had good seafood. We visited in winter, during the town’s off-season, and were grateful for an unexpected free room upgrade. The staff were so nice, and we liked the gift shop. Our room had screened porch areas that made it easy to check the weather and enjoy the view. There’s also a rooftop observation deck, swimming pool, hot tub, and complimentary coffee and tea. They provided local sightseeing tips and birdwatching and hiking materials. One employee had been making a monthly birdwatching guide for a few months, which was really handy. My wife and I will definitely visit again.

My family and I really enjoyed our stay, and after visiting several hotels on Assateague Island, this is my new favorite. The Refuge Inn has a nostalgic vacation feel, with friendly staff and a fantastic breakfast brought right to your door. You can walk or bike to the Chincoteague island wildlife reserve, and the inn has its own ponies just outside the room to visit. The pool and hot tub area is like a romantic sauna, very warm and surrounded by flowers and potted fronds. All-day coffee is another nice feature.
