Last year, our group had a positive visit, and the course staff were accommodating and made sure we had a good time. This year at Kingwood winery and golf resort, everything felt completely different and negative. It seems to be under new management, and I can’t help thinking whoever bought it wants it to fail. The restaurant menu was almost entirely crossed off because items weren’t available. They couldn’t even make a hamburger because they’d run out of ground beef. The next day, the golf course provided sandwiches for our family event at $18 per box, but left out half of what was supposed to be included, including fruit and dessert. When we tried to play, we were told that anyone teeing off after 1 PM could only play nine holes. Someone on the phone had told us the exact opposite two months earlier when we booked. Some people in our group didn’t get check-in instructions, and after 5 PM there was nobody in the lobby. The rooms were old, with nasty old showers. It’s very sad to see what happened to the people who took care of the course. My family was so disappointed that the relatives who chose this place will have to live in shame among the rest of us.
I love coming here, especially in winter when it’s quiet and peaceful, and I’ve stayed several times over the years without being disappointed. The rooms are spacious and the beds comfortable, though the decor feels old fashioned and could use an update. Each room has an outdoor deck with a nice view over the campus. There’s a restaurant and bar, plus wine tastings, an outdoor pool, a sauna, and a steam room. The sauna and steam room are separated by gender, which felt a little weird, but wasn’t a deal breaker. I highly recommend this retreat.
The views and golf are amazing, and there are great deals for a golf stay. The location, prices, and amenities are top notch, with a good restaurant and bar on site. The rooms are dated and the beds aren’t great, but there’s a very serviceable hot tub, sauna, and steam room on the premises too. A man’s dream spot.
We’ll come back to this hidden gem. The golf course was in great shape and a little challenging, and the restaurant food was fantastic. The rooms were clean, with all amenities supplied and in good condition. The staff were personable and great to talk with. We enjoyed hearing about the area from Crystal and her family, and the southern hospitality made the stay feel special. Don’t skip this place, you won’t regret it.
The golf course was in great shape and a lot of fun, and the golf shop employees were stellar. But someone in my group left their AirPods in a cart, and we tracked them back toward the clubhouse. The golf pro shop said nobody had turned them in. While we were pinging them, a maintenance cart pulled up making the AirPods’ dinging sound. The workers first denied having them, but they were actually in one maintenance worker’s pocket. It was an unfortunate end to an otherwise fun day. I’m wary of returning because of some untrustworthy employees. If you play, keep an eye on your belongings when you return your cart.
