Troy Motel

I stayed at the Troy Motel every week for work in the area over the last two and a half years. It was a bit rough when I first started coming, but things improved a lot after upper management changed the manager and staff. They’re friendly and courteous, and do what they can to accommodate you. The rooms are kept clean, with upgrades happening regularly. It’s a quiet, out of the way place, and I’d recommend the Troy Motel whether you’re passing through for a night or staying longer.

The new owner Megan is really friendly and helpful, and is bringing this little gem back into its own. The rooms are basic but clean, and it’s an affordable place that brings back the feel of small local motels. Definitely recommend it if you want a simple, affordable stop along the way.

The room smelled awful, and the first thing that stood out was how obviously dirty the sheets and bedspread were. The bathroom window had a see-through curtain, there was a mop in the shower, and materials for sealing the window had been left on a bed. The sign at check-in says no refunds, and I can see why. I asked to move and got a freshly painted room, but paint was on everything. The heat didn’t work, so there was a space heater. The door chain was missing the part that attaches to the frame, leaving it unusable. There was tape over a hole in the ceiling, the towels were threadbare, and the bathroom floor felt squishy. There also seemed to be some short-stay activity, if you know what I mean. I’d prepaid online for three nights but left after one. Disgusting, don’t stay here.

I ended up staying, but getting checked in was a mess. I’d booked on Expedia around 6, and the sign said to ring the doorbell, but nobody was there. I called and the owner said she’d take care of it. After waiting an hour, I canceled my nonrefundable reservation. Expedia suggested calling in the morning to ask if they’d make an exception on the $72 cancellation charge. When the owner finally got back to me, she was less than apologetic. I decided to stay and checked in around 8, but that wasn’t the end of it. The air didn’t work in the first room. The next room’s air worked, but it smelled strongly of pee. After asking for a third room, I suggested going back to the room I’d stayed in two days earlier, and that’s where I spent the night. They waived my $20 pet fee because of the trouble, but it didn’t feel like enough. I’d try room 4 or one closer to the office, since the others aren’t updated and smell funny.
