MainStay Suites Conover-Hickory

There were several roaches on the counter when I checked in for a week. Don't stay here. The lighting is awful too, like something out of a horror movie.

The beds were comfortable, and the rooms are large, though the bathroom felt cramped. There wasn't anywhere to unwind except the beds or desk chair. There's enough space for a couple of armchairs or a recliner, plus a small table and chairs. A loud pool party carried on past 12:30 a.m., and the continental breakfast was really bad.

I lasted from 5:45 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. before checking out. There were roaches in the bathroom, around the kitchen sink and counter, and on the bed's headboard. The hotel also had a foul smell, possibly insecticide. It was disgusting. The young man at the desk was pleasant and offered another room on a different floor, saying it had "didn't have so many reports of bugs," but it wouldn't be ready until the next day. I couldn't stay. They didn't charge me for the few hours I was there.

The staff were friendly and understanding, and seemed to be trying to deal with the problems. Still, the AC didn't work, things were falling apart, and there were roaches everywhere. The bed, sofa, and curtains had stains, the bathroom sink was clogged, there were odd smells all over, and the walls are paper thin. It looks like the place was recently renovated and could have a lot of potential with some care, but right now I can't recommend it. Unless you have no other choice, look elsewhere.
