We opened the cabin door and decided right then to add another night. It was so comfortable, with a king bed, coffee maker, mini fridge, wet bar, and sofa sleeper. The grounds and rooms were well kept, and the porch was great for sunsets or just sitting outside. The cabins are shaded by tall pines on the hillside as you come into town. This is a great place if you’re traveling with dogs, and we’ll stay again when we’re in Custer. The one drawback for us was that the pool and hot tub close at 20:00. We never got back before 8 pm, but would have liked a soak before bed. In summer, I’d suggest adult hours from 8 to 11 pm.

For getting to the nearby state and national parks, the location was very handy, about a 15-minute drive. Our family cabin slept five, with a queen, two twins, and a fold-out couch, plus a full kitchen and washer/dryer. There was only one bathroom, but it was fine. The cabin was clean and the kitchen modern, and it met our needs. There’s a pool on site that closes at 8 pm, and mini golf and a pie restaurant are within walking distance. It wasn’t somewhere we wanted to hang out. Our cabin felt dark and cramped, with a view of the parking lot. The cabins higher up among the trees looked more scenic and may offer more privacy for relaxing.

The staff were polite, and we had a pleasant stay in rooms that were clean and nice, though a bit too dark for our taste, probably because of the wood ceiling and darker furniture. Breakfast was the letdown. The biscuit gravy was cold and tasted terrible, so we went out for breakfast on the second morning.

Our plans changed at the last minute, and we needed to bring our dog. Gloria in reservations moved us into a cabin that worked for us. We were very happy with it, especially since we hadn’t seen it beforehand.
