Hampton Inn Defiance

We usually come to Ohio once a year and have always had good experiences here with the staff and cleanliness. This visit changed that. At 12:30 am, while we were on the third floor trying to sleep, music from the first floor was extraordinarily loud. We called the front desk to complain and learned it was the owners' birthday. I’m all for celebrating, but nothing was being done about the noise, and we didn’t get to bed until after 1 am. It felt disrespectful to guests who were trying to sleep. Because of that lack of consideration, I can’t say we’ll recommend this hotel or stay here again. Please do better.

The first two nights were quiet and the room was clean, so those went great. Then the third night was awful: people were fighting, making a lot of noise, and passed out in the hallway. I expected the hotel to do more to manage the rowdy guests. They gave us 250 points as compensation. Yay.

The renovation was done well, and my room was clean and fairly quiet. But after four nights here, I wouldn’t stay again. If you need anything before 6am, your experience may be better than mine if that doesn’t matter to you. The trouble started Tuesday morning. A little after 5am I went to the lobby for coffee, but the whole station had been taken apart and the pots were gone. I had coffee in my room, so I went back, had a cup, changed into my gym clothes, and tried the fitness center. Its door wouldn’t open because it doesn’t open until 6am. I’ve traveled around the world and never seen a hotel with no early lobby coffee and a gym that isn’t open 24 hours. That evening I asked the front desk for more room coffee. The packets they gave me didn’t fit my machine. When I explained, the staff member said, “yeah, these are different that we usually have down here,” and shrugged. The next morning there was still no lobby coffee, and I had none in my room, so I couldn’t work out either. I ended up having to leave to buy coffee for the rest of the week. For the price of this property, I shouldn’t have to do that. I later heard someone had ordered the wrong coffee. I’m not sure how rooms were being prepared after guests checked out, but if they knew there wasn’t usable coffee in the rooms, you’d think they’d make sure the lobby coffee was available. I usually stay at the HIE across the field, where the coffee machines and fitness center are both open 24 hours, but they were sold out that week.

Noise ruined our first night, and we couldn’t sleep. I usually choose Hampton Inn wherever I travel because of its quality, so this was a real disappointment. They offered a discounted rate instead of another night to make up for it. I paid because my kids were disappointed. They have a Hampton guarantee, but it failed us badly. I’d expect better from a hotel with this reputation, and I won’t be staying with them anymore.
