My girlfriend and I have stayed here twice, and we love the history and all the stories behind the place. The location's great too, with Charlie Browns just down the block for food. Chris, the owner, was great to talk with at the bar. He'd answer any questions or happily chat about whatever came up, and really get into it. He wasn't what I expected from an owner, in a good way. It'd be hard to dislike him, and if you do, that probably says more about you than him. I think we've had both chefs. The most recent was Brandon, and I apologize for forgetting the other chef's name. Both times we ate breakfast here, we cleared our plates. They offer sweet and savory choices every morning, and they've never disappointed. Nothing too crazy happened, aside from the usual old-house noises. We went up to the third-story tower with a spirit box. It stopped flipping through channels and started playing No Sleep Till Brooklyn by Beastie Boys clearly, which made us laugh. I'm more of a grunge guy, but I don't judge what somebody, or something, wants to listen to, so hell yeah brother 😂. 12 Spirits Tavern is a great, quiet bar attached to the hotel and open to the public. Loved hanging out there for a relaxed drink.

David made a great impression from the first phone call, and the breakfast he cooked was absolutely amazing. He’s a real asset to the Inn. We also had a fun, possibly paranormal moment: music and a woman talking for a long time drifted in one night, and afterward I found reports from other guests who’d heard the same thing in the building. The rooms were lovely, especially the Prague and Royale, but the Prague was so cold we couldn’t enjoy the claw tub. The front desk said I should have called the after-hours number, which I think went to the owner. After looking into it, I learned we were apparently meant to use the ceiling fan to push warm air down from the high ceiling. In the Royale, they left us space heaters and extra blankets, and it was cozy. I first found Patterson Inn while searching for places to stay, and chose it partly because of the smoking lounge. I was disappointed to find it closed when we arrived. The building is old and needs a lot of work inside and out, though it has plenty of potential. Our Royale room opened onto a porch with stairs accessible from the side of the building, which made me a little uneasy. There was also a small hole in the door that could explain the drafts. I’d come back after the improvements.

We never got to spend the night. Our late flight brought us to Denver after 10pm, and the hotel had confirmed that a late arrival was fine. But when we got there, we couldn’t get in. We could see an envelope with our last name inside by the door, but nobody had sent us an entry code or instructions. The door listed an after-hours number, and we called it several times. No answer. The number from our confirmation text went unanswered too. Close to 11pm, we gave up and stayed at the Hilton around the corner, which was fantastic. The manager didn’t call until the next morning, while we were at a local café. My fiancé calmly explained that we didn’t think we should pay for a room we couldn’t use when no one was available to help. The manager said, “if you’re going to use sass I’m not going to give you a refund,” then admitted someone had made a mistake and should have been available by phone. He told us to contact Expedia for the refund since we’d booked through them. Thankfully, they were surprisingly helpful and efficient, and we got our money back. Nobody had called us back that night. We’d booked just hours before check-in, so cancellation wasn’t free and we felt financially stuck. I want to mention that because someone might ask why we didn’t simply leave. Once we arrived, we also realized we didn’t like the location or the way the place looked, so we were relieved to be somewhere more comfortable. We’d hoped for a cute hotel with a great breakfast, based on the reviews. The customer service was horrendous, and I wouldn’t recommend staying here.

Brandon deserves a special mention for making six delicious vegan meals for us across three mornings, one for each of us each day, while accommodating our dietary preferences. We loved every dish and cleaned our plates. Those breakfasts were the highlight of our fantastic stay in the Royale. The staff were welcoming and friendly throughout, and even offered to keep our luggage after checkout on our last day. The building is full of charm, with stained glass windows and detailed woodwork. Thanks for making our first time in Denver such a lovely experience.

We felt so welcome here, thanks to the friendly staff who were happy to accommodate us. I expected breakfast might be tricky as a vegan, but each morning they went out of their way to serve a filling meal with both a sweet and a savory choice. The Inn is in a quiet neighborhood in the heart of Capitol Hill, with public transportation nearby. I had a fantastic stay and will definitely return next time I’m in Denver.
