Courtyard by Marriott Edgewater NYC Area

The staff were kind and courteous, and the location was perfect and convenient for what we needed. We stayed two nights at the Courtyard by Marriott, in room 415, and the visit was pleasant overall. Still, there were several comfort and upkeep problems. The mattress had a deep worn spot that made sleeping uncomfortable, and when we took off the sheets, we saw a yellow stain on the mattress protector. The shower leaked, and the pool area didn’t look thoroughly cleaned. The in-room refrigerator wasn’t working. We called the front desk, but it couldn’t be fixed or replaced. We had medication that needed refrigeration, so we stored it in the car because the weather was cold. That wasn’t a good solution. Cleanliness and maintenance in parts of the hotel need attention. The staff and location were definite positives, and I wanted to share these issues so they can be addressed for future guests.

The room was spacious, the blackout curtain worked well, and the parking garage was nice and affordable. Getting into NYC was easy, and the woman at the front desk gave us bus information. We could hear our upstairs neighbor quite loudly, though, so the walls or floor may be thin. The breakfast experience cost us a star. We didn’t realize it wasn’t complimentary, which was our mistake, but the signs weren’t clear. On the first day nobody brought us a bill; on the second, a girl rudely dropped one on our table without a greeting or explanation. She’d been the Starbucks attendant on her phone when we walked in. The only sign we later saw said to see an attendant for the buffet, and still didn’t clearly say it cost $18 per person. If I’d known, I wouldn’t have gone in. I’m gluten free and the options for someone with an allergy were dismal. We think breakfast may have been included in our room charge on day one, since that day’s bill was higher than day two’s, but breakfast wasn’t listed separately. We also don’t know how they knew we’d eaten, since nobody came over to us that day. Better signage would help. I’d stay here again, but wouldn’t pay that much for the buffet.

The rooms are clean and noticeably roomier than most New York City hotel rooms, and the Edgewater Courtyard is a great choice near our daughter’s home. We can catch the 158 NJ Transit line to the Port Authority in NYC just steps away, which makes getting into the city easy. A couple of small hassles: the mobile key opened our room but couldn’t be used at the elevator, which doesn’t read mobile keys, so we needed a physical key. Also, the shower soap hadn’t been refilled, and I bought shower gel at a nearby store. Even so, we were comfortable and I’d definitely stay here again.

Marriott is usually my favorite place to stay, but the mattresses here are crap. My back was still hurting a day and a half later. At over $250 a night, guests should get better comfort and support. The employees were good, and the food service was convenient and delicious.
