Residence Inn by Marriott Newark Elizabeth/Liberty International Airport

After a long day on the road, Brooke made us feel like we were her only priority. As Hotel Manager, she was welcoming, genuinely friendly, and attentive to our questions and needs. She took care of every detail and explained the services before we had to ask. It was the best reception service we've ever had at a hotel. She's an exceptional person! The stay was clean, comfortable, and convenient, with high standards and a very good complimentary breakfast. There's a large shopping mall a three-minute walk away.

I had no energy to go back to the airport, so I felt stuck staying here and being pushed around. There was a cockroach in my room, room 614, on the night of December 8, 2025. The concierge suggested another room but said nothing else could be done and there was no manager on site. No comps either. She told me to go back to the airport and speak with someone there. The United desk had told me to call for a voucher, but the woman on the phone was cheerfully urging me to take the shuttle and seemed to be trying to send me away. Later she said only members get perks, so I signed up, and then she said perks were only for people who were already members. I asked what I would have received for the roach if I had been a member. I asked another guest whether he'd had a cockroach in his room, and he said no. I think she got irritated about that. She accused me of looking for an argument after I said she'd been nicer to other guests checking in than to me, since she hadn't even welcomed me. I said I was just letting her know, but she kept saying I wanted to argue. She'd even said she wouldn't be able to sleep with cockroaches either, and that if something was small she'd make it into a big thing. The service was very rude.

The staff were great, but the property has seen better days. There was water damage and mold in the breakfast area, broken bathroom tiles, dents in the wall, and carpet pulling up at the seam. Given my Marriott status, I expected something else from a Marriott property. The location was unusual, but okay.

For the whole two weeks I was there, the walk from the front desk to the elevators smelled like burnt curry. With a stovetop in the room, I guess that kind of smell can happen, but lasting the entire stay was a bit much. A shot or two of Febreze works wonders, which I ended up doing myself on day three. Otherwise the staff were great, the airport shuttle driver was good both to and from the airport, and breakfast wasn't too bad.
