I booked online and was due to arrive by Amtrak at 3:30 a.m. I called several times to confirm an early check-in. After the only shuttle in town dropped me off, I went to the front desk, but the door was locked. Nobody answered the phone or my knocks on the door marked “private.” I could plainly hear the office phone ringing behind it when I called. After 30 minutes on the phone with Choice Hotels, they said they could only cancel the reservation so I wouldn’t be charged. There were no taxis at that hour. I’d read there was one taxi in town and it stopped running at midnight. With no shuttle from any Choice Group hotel or motel, I walked 1.8 miles carrying 80 pounds of baggage to the Quality Inn, which was only marginally better. I’ll review that place soon. If this place really did get awards, it must have been in the 60s or 70s. From the outside at 3:30 a.m., the hotel looked like a Section 8 housing complex.

The building is older, but our room was immaculate and the service was excellent. Brenden at the front desk was especially helpful. He mentioned the key cards could be finicky, and following his instructions meant we had no trouble. I’d definitely add this place to my list of spots to stay at again.

We stayed at Rodeway, and the staff couldn’t have been nicer or more accommodating. It’s on the main road, with lots of restaurants and shops within walking distance. Our room was clean, and there was fresh fruit and coffee available all day in the office. There aren’t any national chains in town, just small mom-and-pop motels.

This is a budget motel, so you get what you pay for. We were driving from North Dakota to California and had a late reservation for Wednesday night. The attendant came quickly when we rang the night bell, had the paperwork ready, and was friendly and accommodating. The lot was full, so we had to park in the dirt lot next door. Our king room was clean, though it had a strange smell. I’m not sure if that was the cleaning products or just from being shut up. The AC was running, but the fan wasn’t blowing, and the room stayed close to 80. There was no way to turn on the overhead fan, either. There was no TV in the room. The sheets were clean, and the bed was firm but comfortable. The pillows were pancake-flat and could use replacing. The shower was decent with good water temperature, though the towels were the usual small, thin ones for a two-star motel. It did the job as a place to sleep between several days of driving.

Brendan was a great host who went out of his way to help with whatever I needed, and he made the stay enjoyable. The continental breakfast was basically pastries, but he added donuts, wrap pastries, coffee cake, and gingerbread cookie men for the holidays. The rooms were nice and very affordable. The AC wasn’t working, and I like some background noise when I sleep without having to run the heat. Still, Rodeway isn’t a bad place to stay. Thanks, Brendan.
