Motel 6 Enfield, CT - Hartford

The room felt old and unsafe. The deadbolt and latch lock were broken, and the door looked like it had been kicked in before. With no other working lock, I put a chair in front of the door and balanced my suitcase on it for extra security. How embarrassing. The shower was still wet when I arrived, and there were wet towels left in the bathroom. There's also a huge gap under the door, so I worried mice or other critters could get in and stuffed towels along the bottom. The service was horrible. I would have left if every other hotel in the area hadn't been booked. The rates may look appealing, but this was the worst hotel or motel experience I've had. Stay at your own risk. If I could give no stars, I would.

Check-in was quick, and the room was okay. We stayed from Nov 28 to Nov 30, but were locked out before checkout time. Luckily we had already taken everything out, because we wouldn't have been able to get our belongings. Other guests leaving at the same time had the same problem, and one was understandably furious. A heads-up if you're staying here: keep your door propped open or have someone inside while you pack if you have a lot of stuff. They disable the cards well before checkout.

I booked a non-smoking room, but the covers had more than 10 cigarette burns. The TV did work, but the tub was gross. The stairway was covered in ice and had no salt, and the customer service was horrendous. There's a huge plastic shield between staff and customers, which I can see why they have. They give you 15 minutes after check-in to inspect for roaches and other issues. After that, they'll refuse to accommodate you in any way. The absolute worst hotel.

If sleep matters more to you than the amenities, this place is a hard choice. I was looking for a good night's sleep, and the noise made a huge difference compared with going across the street. Even though staff had said months ago in the comments that the issue would be addressed, it was still a significant problem. The floors are so thin that from a bottom room I could hear every footstep upstairs, along with the TV, and even dust falling. The concrete courtyard outside carries sound too. Someone talking there at 3am can seem like they're on a loudspeaker. A tree packed with birds starts up around 6am, and workers with hammers and circular saws were making noise as well. The amenities are nice after the improvements: calm lighting in the room, a decent TV, a nice fridge, and a beautiful bathroom with good hot water.
