Days Inn Espanola

We checked out early and drove to Santa Fe. The refrigerator was filthy and didn’t work, the mattresses had stains, and the heat was out. Breakfast was stale cereal. At least the milk hadn’t expired.

Please don’t stay here. The room was so dirty that I used my own bedding and cleaned it myself before my husband, who had just had surgery, could be in there. I was worried about infection. The place wasn’t worth the money, and the owner seemed concerned only with keeping our money, not with guests. My original reservation fell through, so I booked here on a whim. At check-in I told the desk employee we had one dog, but he slept in his crate in the car and wouldn’t be in the room. The employee told me to put “no pets,” so I did. The owner later saw my husband walking the dog and claimed the dog had been in the room and that we had two dogs. We have one. At most, our dog briefly ran into the room as we were leaving. The hotel holds a $100 pet deposit if guests don’t disclose a pet. After I argued with the owner for an hour at checkout, he said he’d return the $100. A week later, when it still hadn’t arrived, I went back, and only then did they return it, or so they said. I’m convinced he would’ve found a reason to keep it even if we hadn’t had a dog. Because of this, we had to sleep in our car, since we didn’t have the money for another deposit elsewhere. I needed that money for my husband’s checkup, and I couldn’t put other money into my account. Days Inn should remove this place from its chain.

I stayed one night on December 26, and breakfast was a letdown. We got there at 7:00 AM to find just a few slices of bread and muffins, with nobody around to restock them. They ran out and there were no refills. The other choices were cereal and very average coffee, with no eggs. At check-in, the desk told us they don’t serve meat or eggs. If you want a protein-heavy start to the day, this isn’t the place. The rooms are very dated, the AC units are loud enough to make resting hard, and the beds felt much smaller than queen size.

I’m giving it two stars because the front desk worker was kind and helpful. The rest was a zero for me. The shower hadn’t been cleaned, the WiFi dropped every five seconds or so, and there were no irons. Dogs at the towing company next door barked all evening. The photo shows the breakfast choices.
