I left at 5:00 a.m. to an empty front desk and won’t be back. The only redeeming thing I found was a decent variety at the coffee machine in the unattended breakfast room. For $406.18 for two days in early January, this was at the top end of the Faribault-Northfield options, yet Room 4 was a disappointment. I was in nearby Faribault for the funeral of my first cousin and friend in Northfield MN. The room had the basics, but little of the charm I expected from a historic, expensive “Inn.” There were about six dime-to-quarter-sized dark spots on the industrial carpet near the bathroom, which honestly looked like they might be old blood stains. An old, well-used stuffed chair held four of the six or seven pillows from the bed. The mattress was thin, lumpy, and lacking support or comfort, and seemed to have been there for decades. I’d expect that in an economy freeway motel, not an “Inn.” The large, cheap white plastic TV remote holder screwed to the wall by the bed didn’t fit current remotes and only made the stay feel cheaper. The TV lineup was ordinary local and cable channels, with no premium channel I could find.

The peaceful campus setting is beautiful, and with just 12 unique guest rooms, the comfy décor and thoughtful breakfast make it feel like a real retreat. As a fellow bed and breakfast owner, I can’t help admiring what you’ve created at The Inn at Shattuck-St. Mary’s.

The stonework was what brought us here, since we believed our great-great grandfather was the mason who built it. We were delighted that MARY and DAVID, our hosts the night my sisters and I stayed in three guest rooms, were just as interested in the building’s history as we were. They made the stay wonderful. The rooms were spacious, beautiful, comfortable, and well appointed. This isn’t a five-star hotel like perhaps an Intercontinental Hotel, but it is a stunningly charming place with old-world craftsmanship and modern amenities. Don’t miss the campus chapel. A morning stroll among the buildings was inspiring. The Inn has 12 rooms and often hosts parents of campus students, though it’s open to the public. It was a highlight of our “history tour” of Faribault, and we highly recommend it.

The Inn was a great wedding venue for its ambiance and photography, and we loved being able to stay onsite. Amy on staff made us feel important, not like just couple 384 as at other venues we toured. Every room is spacious and beautifully designed. We rented the entire place for Friday & Saturday and made a wedding weekend of it. It felt like a giant AirBNB with hotel amenities and guest services. Everyone keeps asking our photographer where the wedding was. The Inn is a little secret gem of a venue.
