Best Western Gateway to the Keys

For the price, this place is fantastic. We took a chance despite the bad reviews, and I’m so glad we did. Nelly checked us in, was sweet and courteous, explained everything, and put us in a perfect spot since we had a very expensive enduro bike in the truck bed. The room was very clean. I always check mattresses and under beds, and both were clean. There was a mild bleach smell, which made me feel it was more sterilized. I stayed on the first floor and saw no mold. The tubs people complain about just seem to have a bad reglazing job and a rough texture. They offer free coffee, hot cocoa, tea, fruit water, and cookies at check-in around the clock. Breakfast was yummy, with waffles and toppings, hot sides, and oatmeal. I’d definitely stay again. Checkout at noon was great, too.

The rooms were clean and nice, but noisy. At 1 am, a man with a child knocked on our door. We chose the place for its location and breakfast reviews, but when we came downstairs more than an hour before breakfast ended, the food was all gone. Three other families complained to the front desk after us. The employee responsible for that area was rude and did a poor job looking after guests. There were no eggs, waffle mix, bread, or milk for cereal. Some juice was empty, and she refilled what she chose to with an attitude. We canceled the second and third nights and left. The front desk said they couldn’t help because we booked through Trip.com. Trip.com approved a refund, but the hotel denied it. They lied to us. When I called the next day about a receipt and a possible refund for the last two days, the “manager” talked over me and wouldn’t listen. I asked for an emailed receipt since we’d left and returned the keys, but was refused. Five days later I still didn’t have it. I’ll never stay here again.

The room was decent and clean, and the pool looked nice, though I didn’t have time to use it. Check-in was a little confusing, and I still had to call to get a deal that was shown there but not honored. It’s a two-story hotel with no elevator, so I preferred the first floor rather than carry luggage upstairs. There’s also no ice machine on the second floor. You have to go all the way across the hotel to the first floor, which isn’t convenient.

Breakfast and coffee were a highlight, with delicious food and attentive service. The property was well kept and had a relaxing feel. My room was spotless, comfortable, smelled great, and was thoughtfully maintained, which exceeded my expectations. Staff were welcoming from the moment I arrived. Check-in was smooth, and everyone I met was friendly, professional, and ready to help. I had a wonderful stay at the Best Western, with consistently caring hospitality in every detail. I’d recommend it to anyone visiting Florida City, and I’ll stay here again on my next trip.
