Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham Miamisburg/Dayton Mall South

We got a suite because there weren’t many rooms available, and it was basically a small apartment, with a full kitchen, living room fireplace, and sleeping loft. The furniture was in very good shape, though the carpet and paint looked worn. There weren’t any drinking glasses by the sinks, which was inconvenient. Check-in was quick, and the young woman at the desk was friendly and knew her stuff. It was a very good deal for the money, but the place could use an update.

We ended up leaving after being moved to a second room that was worse than the first. On the balcony, there were clear burn marks from someone grilling, and it hadn’t been repaired properly. Inside, whoever had supposedly cleaned had left stems and buds by the sink, as if they’d been rolling joints there, and had pushed a bottle cap down the disposal. We refused that room too and found somewhere else late at night. The first room was 85 degrees because the AC didn’t work. There was spaghetti hanging from the ceiling over the kitchen, a punched hole in the bathroom door, exposed particle board on the cabinet, and mold in the shower. The desk staff were polite and suggested turning off the AC for a few minutes to thaw it. We went to dinner for two hours, but it still didn’t work. This would have been our third stay in four years, but after this, never again. The place was rough four years ago, and it seems nothing has been improved since. I wouldn’t recommend it.

The room itself was clean apart from some stains on the curtains, and we liked having a full kitchen. Check-in and checkout were easy. But the place really needs work: some stairs felt unsafe, and weeds were all over. When we walked into the room, the art had been removed but its screws were still sticking out of the wall. A small thing, but a pretty off-putting first impression.

The kids had a great time in the clean pool before we left, though the hot tub wasn’t open. Breakfast was free and really good, with eggs, potatoes, sausage gravy, biscuits, and French toast. Check-in was easy, and our group had plenty of room. The place felt a little dingy, with creaky stairs, peeling wallpaper, and an old socket that wouldn’t hold a plug. Still, we had a good stay.
