Formosa Inn

The staff were the only good part. When I told them about the air conditioning in the morning, they seemed genuinely concerned. But I wish I'd stayed somewhere else, and I'm writing this so nobody else makes the same mistake. The outside looked rough when we arrived, though I'd stayed in rough places before and didn't want to judge too soon. The photos were very misleading. Check-in also came with a $100 deposit on a room I'd already paid way too much for. They said I'd get it back in 5-7 business days when I asked at checkout. The decor inside was cute, with pretty, solid wood furniture, and at first I thought maybe I'd been unfair. Then the ceiling fan, which was on a switch that shut off after about 1.5 hours, became a problem because the AC didn't work. It struggled to start, made a horrible mini-explosion kind of noise, then smelled like smoke. We were left with no AC, a flaky fan, and Fresno heat. Miserable, sweaty night. There were also feral cats right outside our door. I love cats and wanted to pet them, but in the middle of the night the colony started fighting and screaming for an agonizing hour before they finally dispersed. I slept in hour-long stretches. I was looking forward to the hot breakfast, but only the waffle machine worked well. The sausage and breakfast potatoes were stone cold even at 7 AM, when breakfast started, and the toaster was a mess and seemed ready to quit. Formosa Inn needs to close or be seriously remodeled. The sister property on site, Garden Inn & Suites, looked half decent, but Formosa is falling apart. Don't book here.
