University Square Hotel

We were terrified. There were filthy scum rings in the tub and roaches, and I asked for a refund. This was horrendous. After we went grocery shopping and came back, a man hurried outside, jumped into the car beside us, and drove off fast. He seemed spooked to see me. My guest returned to the car for the rest of the food, while I went inside. The same man came quickly to the room next to ours, then went in and spoke to a woman for about five minutes. He came out and stood in the hall, looking at me sideways from the doorway. The woman gave me a hateful look. They walked down the hall and tried to enter another room; she stared at me like she wanted to fight, then they left. Around 4 a.m. the next morning, I heard something at the adjoining door and wondered if it was them. I saw tools and light under the door. I was recording, and when they heard something hit the floor, they turned off the flashlight. I'd already called the police. When officers arrived, the owner said the room was empty, then said he might have been in there, and then said he had been checking whether the previous guests had left. He lied three times. The officer asked if I was daydreaming and said the owner had let them in because he was already there on another call. This is crazy. I better get that refund.

We pulled back the sheets and found huge dried blood-like stains. There were dead cockroaches inside the fridge and around the room, as if nobody had bothered to sweep them up. The hallways and room smelled strongly of weed and mold. The elevators and AC were broken. I felt like I was in a dark, dingy horror movie. This place is a dump, more motel than hotel. Don't recommend it. Spend the extra money on somewhere else. Terrible.

The staff were friendly and understanding, but I just didn't feel safe, so I went back to the lobby. The room smelled like mold, and the hallway smelled like Marijuana. Outside there were high weeds, a dining table in the parking lot, a cat in the window, and laundry hanging out to dry. There were lots of people loitering in the parking lot when we arrived, and a sign on the front door said Enforced by Fresno Police. The property might have been amazing 40 years ago, but it's derelict now. A notice inside told guests to check the room on arrival and come back immediately for a cancellation if it wasn't clean. It also said no nudity and that breakfast, gym, and pool weren't available, among a long list of other policies. So I wasn't surprised by the state of the place.

The front desk only apologized and handed us the receipt after we reported everything. There was bird droppings all over the ice machine, and we had just one towel in the bathroom. When we asked for more, they said they had none, and no fresh sheets either. Our bed had blood stains, and we found spiders and cockroaches in it. There was black mold, too. We got bitten and couldn't sleep in the room with all that blood on the bed. Save your money and stay somewhere else. Those pictures only show a small part of it.
