There are plenty of good places to eat and enjoy nightlife within walking distance, plus a bookstore. If it hadn't been so cold, the balcony with porch swings would have been a nice place for coffee or a drink. This old building feels like a step back in time, so judging its cleanliness is tricky, but everything was very clean, even the 'museum' downstairs. My room was clean, the water pressure was great, and everything worked as it should. It was one of the least expensive hotels nearby for our one-night trip from the East Coast to the Midwest. It doesn't have every modern extra, like in-room coffee or a gym, but it has what you need. I'm glad it's still here.

We've stayed here a few times over the years while visiting relatives nearby, but the price won't bring us back. The mattress was so hard that I still haven't slept, and we left early. The back parking lot had no lights at all, and I stepped into a water-filled hole on my way to the car. There was also a skunk by the dumpster just outside the back door. The desk used to be staffed, which seems sensible for a historic hotel. Now guests use lockboxes, but we didn't get the code until we arrived around 2:30 p.m., read the note at the unattended desk, and called the number on it.

It's a beautiful hotel, and hearing about its history made the stay fascinating. The staff were kind and answered our questions about the building and the area. A truly distinctive place, and I'd gladly stay again.

There was no service outside the expected 3-5pm check-in window. I arrived later and found my key in a lockbox, but couldn't get ice, and there was nobody around to help with anything. Lots of people live here, and they seem nice.

The room was very clean, the AC worked well, and the bed was really comfortable. The woman at the front desk was friendly and shared lots of helpful information. It's a charming historic hotel, and I'd stay again if I'm in the area.
