Fairfield Inn & Suites Birmingham Fultondale/I-65

We chose to eat elsewhere on the second and third mornings. Breakfast was okay, but I had hoped for potatoes, and they didn't serve any during our stay. When I asked whether they had mugs available on request, the answer was no. The walls were so thin that we heard everything at all hours. A neighbor's 40+ minute shower sounded like it was happening in our room. About five times a day, a strange, disturbing screech came from somewhere nearby, and we never worked out what it was. The AC only ran in short bursts, cycling on and off every 1-2 minutes while set to Cool between 66-71, which got annoying. There was a strong musty, moldy smell throughout the hotel, including our first-floor room. The hallway was kept at 77F and carpeted, with the pool right there too. The room had the same intense smell. I'm washing every piece of clothing I brought, throwing out what I can, and had to shower right away to get the smell out of my hair. There were dark hairs on the shower shampoo bottles when we checked in, the lower wall was barely holding together, the wallpaper was separating, and we found a roach in the bathroom. Check-in took forever. The guests ahead of us couldn't use their credit cards because the machines weren't working, and two staff members couldn't figure out the problem. The mattress was soft, but the pillows were worse. They sank in and the stuffing kept shifting to the sides, leaving a hole to lie in. I had to bend and fold them, and was uncomfortable every night, waking with back and neck pain. There were no outlets on one side of the bed. After three nights, this was far below the standard of the many other Marriott hotels I've stayed in. I'd avoid it if possible, unless your expectations are very low and you just need somewhere to sleep on a very short trip.
