Dan and the staff were down to earth, accommodating, and just awesome. Dan's breakfasts and brunches draw people from miles around, and I can see why: the lemon chicken, maple salmon, breakfast potatoes, and desserts were delicious. He'll even make things for people while they stand there. I booked the day before flying out for a wedding in Gloucester after seeing the architecture and interior views of The Castle Manor Inn online. When I called after booking, Dan was friendly and professional. Arriving felt like walking into the beautiful, welcoming home of an old friend or relative. My clean room had a generously sized private deck with a stunning view. The inn is conveniently about two minutes by Uber or cab from local shops. Gloucester itself is beautiful, with friendly people and an enchanting East Coast town atmosphere rich in history. I'm planning another trip just to stay there and explore the coast.

I was really disappointed, especially since I usually love hotels and don't tend to have problems with them. We didn't get to stay in the castle and were put in a motel instead. Spiders kept getting into the room, with the disgusting outdoor awning and a gap between the door and frame likely letting them in. The staff were unprofessional. The room had no table or counter space, the beds were uncomfortable, and the toilet made a loud noise every few seconds. Things were crooked, an outlet cover had been ripped off the wall, and you had to push hard on the door to lock it.

The owners know a lot about the area, attractions, and must-sees, and they're great to talk with. We stayed in October and took Ubers to and from Salem, though the train station is less than a mile away. Breakfast cost extra and was fabulous. The room was small and simple but spotless, with a private balcony. The bathroom looked newly renovated and was spotless as well. The heat worked well and the TV was fine. I'd love to return in warmer months, since it looks like a great fishing locale.

The wedding reception was amazing, with gorgeous, comfortable rooms, friendly staff, and some of the best food I've tried. John and Chef Dan deserve a big shoutout for all their help. I never used to like clam chowder, but Chef Dans award winning chowder changed that. I'll definitely be back.

There was no way to heat the room, the TV was hard to operate, and the beds were very uncomfortable, like they were sinking. The radiator was so noisy it was hard to sleep. Staff weren't around from six at night until eight in the morning, so if something went wrong, you were on your own. The guy running the place misled us about whether we'd be staying in the lodge or castle part, and we almost didn't get to stay in the castle. Breakfast costs extra, too. Wouldn't recommend.
