The black rock beach kept me there longer than I expected. I could watch those waves for ages, and being so close to the surf made the long, tense drive worth it. We had a great dinner, slept well, and honestly I didn't want to leave. Staff were really friendly, too. We stayed in Unit #2 Popolana in early March, and the view was the best. I worried about having no AC, bugs, and mosquitoes so close to the “jungle,” but it turned out much better than I expected. You need to leave the balcony doors open, with the screens open or shut, to sleep without air conditioning. The room was incredibly clean, and there were no bugs inside. The furnishings are dated, but that didn't bother us much.

From our deck we could see the beach, and it took less than two minutes to step out for sunrise. We stayed in room #1. I think room #3, across from ours, would have the most direct sunrise view. Hana Kai is right by the sand, which was a big reason we chose it. With few places to stay around here, it makes a good alternative to the larger nearby resort. The units are spacious, with a full kitchen, big living area, and huge open-air balcony, so the extra room and oceanfront setting felt like good value, especially for a longer stay. Inside, things are simple and have more of an Airbnb feel, which fit what we expected in Hana. Wifi worked well, and checking in after hours was easy.

We loved seeing sunrise from the balcony, and the oceanfront setting has amazing views. Black sand beach, red sand beach, and Haleakalā national park were highlights for us, with a few other beaches also within walking distance. There are food trucks in town and two small grocery marts. The room was clean and looked after, though dated, and the property feels old. There was no AC. We hoped for a sea breeze, but didn't get much in the upper building. They provided several fans, which helped, but it was warm during our late January stay. Staff were friendly and helpful. Laundry service is available, though not in the room. For those reasons, 4/5 stars.

Black rock beach right outside the window is gorgeous, and Unit #207 was terrific, with everything we needed to explore this side of the island and unwind. We rented directly from Tom and Viki on VRBO. They're fabulous hosts and easy to deal with. Remember to rent from them directly. Cheers.

We only had one night and were already sad to leave. It's quiet and relaxing, with the beach right outside for sunrise, and the employees were friendly and helpful. The few restaurants in Hana are within walking distance. We'd been debating whether to stay in Hana after the Road to Hana or drive back, then stopped here on a whim. So glad we did. Our one-bedroom was very clean and spacious, with a full kitchen, living room, patio dining set, and another porch. There were plenty of sliding doors for airflow and privacy. We'd love to return.
