Hampton Inn Harrisonburg - South

The breakfast was good, and the room was clean, but the air-conditioning didn’t work, which made the stay subpar. I couldn’t get the problem addressed, and when I told the front desk, they offered no solution or much of anything. It’s a typical Hampton Inn, though I’ve stayed at better ones.

The staff were courteous and did resolve the mix-up, and I’m grateful the couple who entered our room were honest and didn’t take anything. Still, the hotel should have contacted us and handled things proactively instead of leaving us to discover the problem and chase down a resolution. We checked in around 4, washed up, and left our suitcase in the room. When we came back that evening, our key didn’t work, so the front desk employee opened the door with her master key. Our suitcase was gone. At the desk, we learned the room had been assigned to another couple. They quickly realized someone else might be staying there or that luggage had been left behind. The hotel gave them another room and brought our suitcase to the front desk, but we had to wait quite a while while they corrected everything in the computer.

Breakfast had lots of options, and most of the staff were very helpful. The room itself was a little dated, with an old TV and furniture that showed its age and was somewhat beat up. The mini-fridge made noises at random times. One elevator stopped working during our stay, and as we were leaving we met the people who’d been stuck in it for a few minutes. Even when both elevators were running, they were very slow.

This was an okay hotel, and the property was clean. It was quiet, including the air-conditioning, which didn’t sound like the rattly John Deere window units some places have. Breakfast was fair and enough to get a little fuel for the day, which was what I expected. If you want a grand meal, go somewhere else for breakfast. We chose this spot as a quick overnight base to see the colors around the Shenandoah area. Sure, we could have stayed closer, but this worked fine and gave us some road time and a taste of Virginia countryside and parks. Hampton Inns vary, with some great and some less so; this one was just okay. If you want something better, that’s easy to find.
