I left early Saturday to get medical care after finding what looked like bed bugs in my room. I had over 40 bites on my arms and neck, and took photos before reporting it. The staff wouldn’t acknowledge the problem and said they needed to inspect it themselves before doing anything. I’d booked two rooms because a friend was meant to come, but had to cancel for a family emergency. Even with my early checkout, I was charged for both rooms. By the next day I had a fever over 100°F and felt too sick to work Monday or Tuesday. I’m only just starting to recover enough to get out of bed and write this. Management was hard to reach and wouldn’t take responsibility. There was no refund or help with the extra costs, missed work, or disruption. The front desk staff were rude and unhelpful throughout the stay. Between the room cleanliness concerns, the effect on my health, and the lack of accountability, this was one of the worst hotel experiences I’ve had. I wouldn’t return or recommend it.
The Ridge Room on the roof was a highlight, with wide views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and local beer and cocktails. The rooms were roomy and had comfortable beds and the Cozy Corner sofa sleeper. The indoor pool and 24/7 Market were handy too. The lobby, with its fireplace, felt welcoming and modern. Staff were friendly, and the property was in pristine condition. It’s under a mile from James Madison University and a quick drive to Shenandoah National Park, making it convenient for campus trips or getting outdoors. A standout stay in the 22801 area, with a refreshing feel that suits the Shenandoah Valley.
The room was clean, modern, and looked after, with what I needed for a comfortable visit. Staff were welcoming and professional, and the amenities and relaxed atmosphere made the stay feel polished. I’d happily come back, whether for work or a quick break. Highly recommend.
I won’t stay here again. I cancelled after a genuine mix-up: I thought the reservation wasn’t final because I was still waiting to send in an authorization form. When I called, the man on the phone said there was no grace period and they’d charge the full cancellation fee. He said maybe he’d make an exception if I stayed every other week, but since I was a peasant who came once a year for a few nights, he’d charge me for a night. The fee was $156. The hotel was fully booked on the day I cancelled, around JMU graduations, so I’m fairly sure that room was resold within an hour. It didn’t seem like the charge was making up for a lost booking. There was no discussion of the circumstances or effort to find a middle ground, even though a front desk worker or manager could have used some common sense. This policy may win one transaction, but it lost a customer. I’d tell people booking in Harrisonburg to choose somewhere staff can treat guests like people.
The top-floor bar was a cool spot, with a nice view of the city. Staff were really friendly, and our room was clean and very nice. I’d recommend staying here again, 10/10.
