The Guest House Inn on Courthouse Square

The bathroom water pressure was much stronger than we liked, though I can see how someone might enjoy it. The building itself has a lot of charm, but its systems feel dated. The room doors have no deadbolts, so it seems like they could be opened with a credit card or screwdriver. We were told the fire and security systems were offline, and the cameras don’t cover the driveway. When we arrived, the basement door was standing ajar and unlocked. We checked whether anyone was down there and found an exterior door that wouldn’t lock. It seemed there was nothing stopping someone from getting into the rest of the house.

After driving in the dark, we were tired and just needed somewhere to stay. The main house was full, but the people we called were so kind and found us space at Parker House around the corner. It was a cozy, clean stay in a really cool historic place. We got to Hinton, W Virginia after dark, and I’d recommend it.

I’d happily stay here again. There’s a restaurant for lunch or dinner, a museum, and a library within walking distance. We were busy meeting friends, so I didn’t get to explore much of the shared space. My room had a reading nook with a leather couch and plenty of storage for clothes if you’re staying several days. The bathroom was beautifully done, and the whole historic house has been fully restored. One thing I’d change next time: I should’ve asked for a first floor room, since stairs are difficult for me.

I felt unsafe and violated after two men came into my room while I was in my pajamas. The manager had helped right away when I got the address wrong, and we’d been told we were the only guests in the house. But around 9 in the morning, the men came in loudly and tried the codes on each bedroom door. I assume they worked there, though I still don’t understand why they were in an occupied building. They opened my door, then apologized and said they hadn’t known anyone was staying there. The front door and bedroom door had no security beyond the keypads, so anyone with a code could get in. I emailed management immediately. They offered a free stay or a partial refund, and I chose the refund. It never came. I followed up two weeks later, and they apologized and said they’d process it right away. That was over a month ago, and I still haven’t received anything. I’d never return.
