I work in hospitality and always check the beds for bed bugs before bringing in my bags. In the first room, I saw little black marks on the sheets and pillows that looked like pen marks, so I asked for another room and tried to give the hotel the benefit of the doubt. The second room had the same spots, even more of them. I agreed to look at a third room, but it smelled bad and I saw an actual bed bug. We left right away. We’d spent about 30 minutes at the hotel and went next door to the Hilton, which cost twice as much but didn’t have bugs. The hotel has only offered me a partial refund, and I’m still trying to get the rest of my money back. They wouldn’t refund me when I first asked, citing their 24-hour cancellation policy, which shouldn’t apply to a bed bug infestation. Beware of the bugs and the refund policy. I’d traveled three hours to Zeeland because my mother was dying and I wanted to be with her in her final days. It was her last 24 hours. I booked a king studio suite with a pull-out couch for one night, and by the time my children and I arrived, it was late. I was exhausted from crying and everything surrounding the visit. At check-in, I was told the king room didn’t have the pull-out couch advertised. I had to switch room types and pay an extra $15. Please see the photo for proof of the false advertising.

We paid for three nights but left after the first because the rooms were so filthy. We’d checked before leaving that we could cancel for a refund, and the front desk woman said yes. She was wrong, and we were charged for the other nights. They also require 24 hours’ notice to check out, which meant we couldn’t leave that first night. The lobby smelled musty as soon as we walked in. Room 208, which already has bad reviews here, smelled awful, so we hauled our stuff back to the lobby and switched rooms. The next room was dirty too, with what looked like mold on the curtains, a torn mattress, a badly made bed, and little stains and bits of dirt on the pillows and sheets. The people next door were blasting music and partying. It was late, so we felt stuck there. I only took a few photos, but I wish I could get a full refund for those first two rooms. Don’t stay if cleanliness and helpful staff matter to you.

Breakfast came with our stay, though the dining area only had a couple of tables. We brought our service dog, and the hotel was pet friendly. The room was clean and didn’t smell. Rates were a bit high because of the Tulip Festival, but I’d stay again if I visit Holland, Michigan.

The staff were some of the nicest people I’ve met in a long time, and they went out of their way to make sure I was happy. The hotel isn’t the Waldorf Astoria, but it’s very clean and well kept.

I’d read some reviews that made me hesitate, but with airfare, a rental car, and wedding costs piling up on our trip from California, we needed somewhere affordable. I booked, and the hotel turned out clean and well maintained. Our room was in good shape, the bed was comfortable, and we had a mini-fridge and microwave. Housekeeping freshened the room while we were out, which I don’t see many places doing these days unless you ask. Breakfast had hot choices every morning of our three-day stay: eggs, sausage, and a waffle maker. There was also cereal, yogurt, toast, bagels, and muffins, despite reviews saying there were no hot items. Staff were friendly and helpful. The location isn’t downtown, but the main attractions are just a few minutes away by car. There’s a shopping center with a grocery store across the street, and Bob Evans is on the corner if you want breakfast cooked to order. I’d stay again in Holland if I needed a budget-friendly place.
