Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham Holland

The friendly staff are the reason I'm giving this two stars. The hotel did the job for a weekend, but it was completely average for nearly $200 a night, when I don't think it should cost more than $100. Our room was small and only sort of clean, with some kind of mystery stain on the ceiling. We probably won't return.

It was nice that the small room was clean and pet friendly, but we could hear music and our neighbors often through the thin walls. Also, make sure to switch on the vent fan when you shower. The steam set off the fire alarm in our room. The desk didn't answer when we called, and when we brought it up at checkout, the woman there just shrugged. Luckily, we could open the exterior windows and clear the steam quickly, which stopped the alarm.

I've stayed here four times now and have never been disappointed. The room had a faint damp smell, probably from cleaning, but it wasn't unpleasant. It's a nice, safe place and well kept. When I headed up to Traverse City, I accidentally left my mouth retainer behind. I called the next day, and they had kept it for me. I picked it up several days later. Since it was wrapped in a tissue, they had to pay close attention to find and save it, which spared me a nightmare trying to replace it. The front desk people I've dealt with have all been extremely polite and professional. I visit Holland once a year and will stay here again.

I'm not looking for a Hilton, and this place is a little rough around the edges, but I'd stay again. It's close to downtown Holland, and the people at the counter were available and helpful. The beds and pillows were the best I've ever had, and the hallways were almost silent. Those are the things that matter most to me.
